Texas summer weekends are short. Here are the six family weekend getaways near Austin we'd actually book — all drivable, all kid-friendly, ranked for what actually matters when you have kids in the car.
1. Son's River Ranch — Kingsbury (45 min)
Why we put it first: closest spring-fed river, on-property tubing, kayaking, cabanas, glamping cabins and safari cabins. You park once, kids stay busy, parents stay relaxed. Right now, Safari Cabins are $99/night on weekdays through June 11th.

2. New Braunfels — Comal & Guadalupe Rivers (60 min)
Big-river energy, more crowds, more parking headaches. Great if you've already done the closer options. See San Marcos vs. Guadalupe.
3. Wimberley — Blue Hole & Jacob's Well (75 min)
Reservation-only swimming holes, postcard-pretty, but only really a day trip — most lodging in town is pricey for what you get.
4. Fredericksburg (75 min)
Wine country and Main Street shops. Better for couples and grandparents than kids — keep this one in your back pocket.
5. Boerne — Sons Blue River Camp (90 min)
Our sister property on the Blanco River. Same family-run vibe, different watershed. See Son's Blue River Camp.
6. Inks Lake State Park (90 min)
Lake camping with cliff jumping. Reserve months ahead — books out fast.

Our honest pick
If you have one weekend and you've never been, drive 45 minutes to Son's River Ranch. The combination of clear spring water + on-property activities + flexible lodging is hard to beat. See the full 2-day itinerary.
