Fun Family Getaway Near Austin: A 2-Day Riverside Plan Kids Will Remember

Screens off, river on. A 45-minute drive to a weekend that actually feels like a vacation.

A genuinely fun family getaway near Austin is harder to find than it should be. Theme parks are crowded and expensive. State parks book out two months ahead. Lake houses are great until everyone's on a phone by 2 p.m. The fix is a riverside weekend at Son's River Ranch — 168 acres on the spring-fed San Marcos River, 45 minutes from downtown Austin.

    Why families love it here

It's pet-free, calm, and built around kids. The river runs 72°F year-round with small rapids and no dams, so kids can wade, swim and tube safely. There are fire pits at every cabin and tent site, picnic tables, BBQ pits, and 168 acres to roam.

It's also a real outdoors trip without sacrificing comfort — our safari cabins sleep up to 9 with A/C, real beds and a kitchenette, which makes them ideal for multi-gen families and reunions.

    What to pack

    • Reef-safe sunscreen, bug spray, hats
    • Cooler, groceries, marshmallows
    • Headlamps, flashlights for the walk back from the river at night
    • Board games for after dark — there's Wi-Fi but you won't want it

    Beyond the property

If your crew wants more before or after, the official Austin visitors page covers in-town options. Texas Parks & Wildlife has good background on the San Marcos River. And if you're considering a different property in our family, check our sister camp Son's Blue River Camp on the Blanco River.
